Climate
As part of its early warning efforts, FSNAU with technical partner FEWSNET, closely  monitors and analyzes climate information on a regular basis. FSNAU  analyzes remotely sensed and modeled climate data from USGS and JRC  MARS and then triangulates or ground truths this analysis with field observations from its network of 35 field staff who are based fulltime throughout Somalia.

Civil Insecurity
In conjunction with climate, civil insecurity (including conflict) is a key driver affecting food and livelihood security in Somalia. Agriculture
Agricultural sector analysis and its contribution to livelihoods and food security is a major component of FSNAU's monitoring and analysis activities. FSNAU continually monitors the agriculture sector, including current situational analysis of crop cycles and performance, cereal prices and supply and agricultural labor activities as part of its early warning monitoring. The analysis is combined with FSNAU's Baseline Livelihoods Analysis to determine the impact of changes in agricultural sector on food and livelihood security.

Livestock
Pastoralism and trade of livestock remains the principal livelihood for a majority of Somalis and accounts for roughly 80% of export earnings annually. FSNAU closely monitors the livestock sector and its impact on livelihoods and food security. Pastoralist seasonal migration is monitored along with the climatic situation (which usually determines where pastoralists will go to graze their livestock). FSNAU monitors livestock sale price for local and export-quality livestock at major and local markets.  This analysis is combined with FSNAU's Baseline Livelihood Analysis to determine the impact of change in the livestock sector to livelihood security.

Markets
Market analysis and its impact on livelihoods and food security is a major component of FSNAU's monitoring and analysis activities. FSNAU continually monitors market trends as part of its early warning monitoring and combines this analysis with Baseline Livelihoods Analysis to determine the impact of market trends and changes on food and livelihood security.

Nutrition
In an effort to illustrate the nutrition situation in a manner helpful for response agencies and donors, FSNAU has developed over the years, a format for analyzing the nutrition situation which results in a cartographical output. This framework forms the basis for the nutrition situation classification and the Estimated Nutrition Situation map and is based on international thresholds, where available, and contextually relevant analysis where not available.
